As a kid, I wasn’t athletic in the slightest, despite how badly I wanted to be. I was awful at every sport I played, and the competitiveness in team sports terrified me. I first found FYR Denver through a presentation at my school and it was the first time I saw people playing a sport and thought, โI can do that.โ FYR Denver is important to me because I grew up in a complicated household where it was easier to isolate myself rather than reach out for help when things got rough. FYR Denver surrounded me with a community of unconditional acceptance and support. Being in a community unified through struggle, inside of the gym and out, allowed me to feel a true sense of belonging for the first time.
