Introduction/Overview

FYR Denver is a local chapter of a national nonprofit seeking to provide at-risk youth with fitness, nutrition, and mentorship. It is imperative that our coaches align with our mission and are seeking to give back to those less fortunate in a meaningful way. Please review the FYR Denver Code of Ethics for additional requirements as a coach and mentor with FYR Denver. The on-boarding process requires signing the Code of Ethics and completing a background check. 

Experience Required: One to four years of fitness coaching experience 

Duties and Essential Functions

  • Coach youth athletes, ranging in ages from 10-20, in the FYR Denver class structure including motivation/personal development, warm up, fitness and cool down.
  • Assist youth athletes in developing personal fitness goals and serve as a liaison to athletes
  • Be consistent and punctual in maintaining a class schedule and communication with both the program liaison and FYR Denver volunteer coordinator.
  • Develop a proper warm up sequence to prepare members for the days planned exercises. Teach the movements and provide coaching cues to ensure safety for FYR Denver athletes. Provide scaling of movements as required for athlete success.
  • Ensure that all youth athletes get an exceptional experience through promoting a very encouraging, inclusive and warm environment.
  • Apply programming experience to the development of age and skill appropriate. Work with FYR Denver Director of Programming to establish a variety of interesting, challenging movements.
  • Establish an awareness of the mental and physical needs of participants. Adjust communication and coaching practices to optimize the sense of engagement.
  • Distribute and collect parent signed participation forms. Track class attendance for new and visiting youth athletes and volunteers and deliver to FYR Denver Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Create an inclusive, welcoming, friendly and encouraging environment for all youth athletes.
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to class to ensure space is ready and programming is displayed for participants.
  • Greet potential and visiting youth athletes. Clearly communicate and promote the FYR Denver program, values and ways to engage (both for athletes, volunteers and support).

Leadership

  • All coaches, volunteers and youth athletes consistently demonstrate the core values of FYR Denver.
  • Ensure youth athletes are achieving results and feel empowered and supported.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all coaches, location staff and youth athletes.
  • Attend required FYR Denver training on subjects beyond fitness including mental health, responding to the needs of at-risk youth, etc.
  • Leverage experiences with youth participants to improve and grow the program through deeper engagement, broader challenges, long term planning, etc.
  • Be ready to respond to emergencies that occur during workouts.

Facilities

  • Meticulously follow opening and closing procedures established for each workout space.
  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of workout spaces before, during and after workouts.
  • Follow established cleaning checklist for each location including special procedures that respond to unusual circumstances such as COVID.
  • Communicate any equipment issues or repairs needed to Head Coach. Assist in maintenance of equipment as needed. 

How Your Performance Will Be Evaluated

  • Quality of coaching based on youth athlete surveys and feedback as well as board review.
  • Orderliness and cleanliness of facilities and equipment.
  • Direct observation by FYR Denver team.
